St. Joseph's College
Overview
St. Joseph’s College was established in the year 1882 as an educational initiative by the French Foreign Mission Fathers for the purpose of providing higher education. In 1937, the administration and management of the college was handed over to the Jesuits, a worldwide Catholic religious order with a special focus on education. The Jesuits are also responsible for running other premier institutions in India like Loyola College (Chennai), St. Xavier's College (Calcutta), and St. Xavier's College (Mumbai). The Department of Commerce was newly established in 1949. In 1972, it became an independent college under the name of St. Joseph's College of Commerce. St. Joseph’s College is recognized under the UGC Act. It became an autonomous institution in October 2004.
Students who enroll in St. Josephs College are moulded with a unique combination of academics, appropriate attitudes and empathy, extensive skill sets, and a high level of competence. Students are trained to not only excel but also spread excellence and deep-seated virtues of service to the community. The College motto is 'Fide et Labore' which means 'Faith and Toil'. St. Josephs College believes that a strong foundation in Faith among other things gives students a commitment to God and his pursuits while Toil is a pre-requisite ingredient for success.
St. Josephs College provides students with multiple opportunities for national and international collaborations.
