Mathematics and Physics are not mandatory for Engineering admission- AICTE

  • All India Council for Technical education (AICTE) announces that Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) are not compulsory subjects for certain Engineering courses admission for 2021-22.
  • This change has brought about many controversies and the regulatory body admits students to streams like Textile Engineering, Agriculture Engineering and biotechnology, though most of the courses PCM stands as compulsory subjects in class XII.
  • AICTE Chairman- Anil Sahasrabudhe stated that the flexibility in the eligibility criteria for admission to B.E/B.Tech Courses has been introduced to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to apply and reduce the pressure on students to study topics that are not crucial to their programme.
  • AICTE has released a handbook in context to the eligibility criteria which mentions, students have to pass 10+2 with any of the three following subjects- Physics/ Mathematics/ Chemistry/ Computer Science/ Electronics/Information Technology/ Biology/ Informatics Practices/ Biotechnology/ Technical Vocational Subject/ Agriculture/ Engineering Graphics/ Business Studies/ Entrepreneurship.
  • Candidates have to score 45% marks (40% marks- reserved category) in the above subjects taken together.
  • The Universities will arrange suitable bridge courses for students having a diverse background to achieve learning outcomes of the programme.
